At the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia in Sepang Leipert Motorsport had a season opener full of thrills. While they were still struggling with heavy rain in the first race, the driver duo Wee / Leitch conquered the podium of the ProAm classification on Sunday.
Wegberg, Germany - Monday, 08.04.2019
The 2019 motorsport season is underway! Last weekend the Lamborghini Super Trofeo made its season debut at the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia. Involved in the battle for points: The Leipert Motorsport driver duo Brendon Leitch (New Zealand, 23) and Keong Wee (Singapore, 39). On 5.543 kilometres of asphalt the two fought for a solid result in the top five before being cheered on by the spectators in the second race.
After first weather turbulences in the top five
In the first qualifying of the season Brendon Leitch managed a fast lap and secured a solid starting position for himself and his team mate with ninth overall (P3 class ProAm). The race, which was held late in the evening in the early twilight, was held differently than planned: Due to heavy rainfall the race had to be started behind the safety car. After the official starting signal, the New Zealander was already in seventh place overall, handing over to his colleague in sixth place. Keong Wee made the decision to stay on rain tyres, which later proved to be difficult. The track dried faster and faster, so it was a final fight with blunt weapons. Wee crossed the finish line with the Leipert Motorsport Lamborghini in ninth place overall (P5 class ProAm) - thus also capturing the first points of the season.
Podium fight in the last race lap
With a big pack of ambition in their luggage, the team supported by MOTUL entered the second race this weekend. Keong Wee, who took tenth place on the grid (P4 class ProAm), struggled at the start of the race and lost one position. A short time later, however, he fought his way back and then handed over to his teammate Brendon Leitch. The 23-year-old proved his talent: first overtaking manoeuvre, second, third - he quickly moved up to seventh place overall (P4 ProAm class). Then he saw his target ahead of him: the third place in the ProAm ranking. Only one corner before the finishing line he set off and - overtook! The applause of the Leipert Motorsport team was huge when the drivers collected the well-deserved trophy on the podium a while later. Third place in the ProAm ranking and P6 in the overall ranking.
The first successful race weekend of the Lamborghini Super Trofeo Asia is already history.
Until the next race in Suzuka (22.-23.06.) there will be no break for the team, because already this week the first races of the GT4 European Series will take place in Monza and at the end of April the first races of the ADAC GT4 Germany in Oschersleben with the AMG GT4 cars.
