Excellent performance by Team Leipert Motorsport at the endurance race in Portimao. The faster version of the Mercedes AMG GT4 was used by the team for the first time. Together with the driver quintet Korpivaara, Schlotter, Wagner, Paverud and Baumann the team crossed the finish line after 24 hours as twelfth overall and winner of the SPX class.
Wegberg, Germany - Wednesday, 10.07.2019
It was the first 24-hour race held with the new, more powerful Mercedes AMG GT4. Leipert Motorsport acted as the team for this project with the drivers Ilmari Korpivaara (20, Finland), Harald Schlotter (55, Germany), Yury Wagner (18, Luxembourg), Marcus Paverud (19, Norway) and Mercedes specialist Dominik Baumann (26, Austria). Considering that the Mercedes AMG GT4 has significantly more power and less weight than the standard GT4, the start was in the SPX class - with full success!
Qualifying puts the team in 13th overall place on the grid
The Autódromo Internacional do Algarve is located picturesquely in the holiday region of Portimao on the coast of Portugal. In qualifying the power density of the field of drivers quickly showed itself. All lap times were close together. The Leipert Motorsport Quintett took the 13th starting position overall. In the SPX classification, this meant third place on the grid for the 24-hour race.
After 24 hours and skilful teamplay: Class victory!
Plenty of sun but no beach holiday for the team. With summer temperatures around the 25 degree mark, the field of almost 30 vehicles started into the endurance race. Leipert Motorsport presented itself from the beginning as a powerful competitor. At the beginning there were always fights for the top of the class SPX. The Mercedes AMG GT4 ran like clockwork. After the first hours of racing, the lead was no longer called into question. The team confidently mastered the race. The driver changes and routine stops went without any problems and when the chequered flag was waved after a long night and many hours of work, the Leipert Motorsport Mercedes AMG GT4 crossed the finish line in twelfth place overall - and as class winner of the SPX! What a success! With the faster GT4 version for the first time at a 24-hour race and directly on the podium. An achievement that was duly celebrated by the team, which also thanked AMG's race support afterwards.
The next 24h race for the MOTUL supported Wegberger Team Leipert Motorsport will take place in Cota (Texas) in autumn (15.-17.11.2019).
